As the Chicago Cubs continue their march toward the regular season, another injury raises concern. Patrick Wisdom is still dealing with a back injury, which may put his Opening Day status in question.
Patrick Wisdom was scratched from Cubs lineup tonight because back stiffness is still bothering him. He's seeing doctor today & Craig Counsell isn't sure yet what next step will be: "There's some concern."

Opening Day could be jeopardy for Wisdom, who hasn't played since Wed.
The veteran slugger has had a solid spring at the plate before the injury. Mostly known for his power, Wisdom posted a 1.188 OPS in 16 plate appearances. Despite his production at the plate, it didn't seem he'd reclaim an everyday role in the Cubs lineup.
Wisdom was once the team's starting third baseman, but the Cubs seem to be pivoting from him in favor of Christopher Morel. While Wisdom's role on the 2024 team wasn't as defined, the Cubs will still feel the impact if he misses time entering the regular season.
Garrett Cooper and Dominic Smith will likely be the main beneficiaries if Wisdom isn't ready for Opening Day. Both players have had impressive Spring Training showings at the plate, and if they continue their production, manager Craig Counsell will have quality options at his disposal.
With question marks heading into the 2024 season, dealing with a lingering injury isn't an ideal situation for Wisdom. At age 32, the slugger has been a reliable source of power for the Cubs since the 2021 season. Despite only appearing in 97 games in 2023, Wisdom still hit an impressive 23 home runs.
Wisdom will surely look to return to the club as soon as possible. But given that his injury has been persistent, it'd be wise not to rush back too soon. The Cubs certainly have plenty of options to fill in for him.
